Flexibility is the ability of a joint to move with ease through a specific range of motion (ROM). Each joint has a different range of motion and an optimal amount of flexibility. Flexibility can be maintained and improved with regular stretching, as part of your fitness routine, and being inflexible can be a detriment to cardiovascular and strength training and may increase your risk of injury.
| Because the loss of flexibility is not something that you can easily or immediately see, as you can an extra ten pounds or a flexing muscle, it is an often overlooked component of our fitness routines. However, flexibility is an integral part of our overall fitness and must be trained similar to our cardiovascular and muscular systems. |
Flexibility training also provides an opportunity for you to become more in-tune with your body and its current physical state. Stretching can provide a quiet time with yourself to reflect or meditate. A flexibility work out or session, on its own, provides the opportunity to thoroughly stretch the muscles. The opportunity o relax and rejuvenate at the end of a workout can also be a much appreciated time. The current popularity of yoga, and other mind-body activities, is an attribute to the need for more reflective activities in our lives.
Many of the factors that limit flexibility, such as inactivity, are factors that we control. As a result we can see dramatic improvements in flexibility from a regular routine of stretching.
